Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Calgary's Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) program specializes in advanced heart surgeries through smaller incisions, promoting quicker recovery times

What is Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS)?

Conventional open-heart surgery requires your surgeon to access your heart by cutting through the sternum. Minimally invasive surgery is done through an incision between the ribs, often resulting in quicker recovery time.

About Calgary's MICS program

Dr. Andrew Maitland pioneered the minimally invasive cardiac surgery program within the University of Calgary's Department of Cardiac Sciences more than a decade ago. Now retired, he was a mentor whose legacy continues to inspire the team to master the advanced skills needed to perform these surgeries.

Today, the program involves five surgeons who offer a variety of minimally invasive surgeries, including mitral and aortic valve surgeries, coronary artery bypass and atrial septal defect closure.
