Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta

Heart Function Fellowship

Program Description

The Heart Function program consists of three rapidly expanding clinics that follow >600 patients. New funding makes it possible for the program to expand to meet needs in the region. This includes improved access through telehealth, virtual clinics and trained nurse navigators. A large in-patient heart failure population is served at all three adult acute care hospitals in Calgary. Included is a very active biventricular pacing program, a transplant assessment and follow up service, and a new LVAD program.

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta's research program encompasses all aspects of cardiovascular physiology and disease including biophysics, pharmacology and molecular biology of cardiac cells and their role in arrhythmias and syncope, integrative physiology of the heart and cardiovascular system and mechanics, and excitation-contraction coupling of cardiac muscle in cardiac hypertrophy and congestive heart failure. The Libin Institute now intends to build aggressively on its cores of excellence in molecular biological and clinical studies of cardiovascular diseases, clinical trials and mechanistic studies of cardiovascular diseases.

Training in heart function may be combined with other subspecialty interests such as echo or electrophysiology. The program will be up to two years but is flexible to fit career plans. This is an excellent opportunity to develop advanced clinical and/or investigative skills in a rich environment with potential collaboration with a productive group of clinical and basic researchers. The salary is commensurate with the level of training.
