Libin Core Pathology Laboratory

Health Research Innovation Centre (HRIC) GB44

The Libin Institute’s Core Pathology Lab is a shared resource centre within the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta to manage and process human and animal tissue, cultured cells and artificial samples. The Core Pathology Lab’s services are open to all University of Calgary principal investigators, including their staff and students.

Currently, users may leave samples with Core Pathology Lab staff members, who will process each sample. When complete, users may pick up their result(s) and/or slide(s), or the Core Pathology Lab may photograph the result(s) and e-mail it to the user. Turnaround time will depend on volume.

Tissue Blocks

The Core Pathology Laboratory staff are able to make tissue blocks and sections in:

  • Paraffin
  • Frozen
  • Plastic (bone, metal, polymer)

Lab staff can also analyze chemical stains, for example:

  • Hematoxylin and Eosin; H.E_____(Histopathological diagnosis)
  • Masson’s Trichrome; M.T _______(tissue fibrousis)
  • Movat Pentchrome; M.P  ________(elastic fiber, collagen, mucins)
  • Verhoeff-Van Gieson; VVG/EVG ____(elastic fiber, collagen)
  • Alcian Blue ______(mucin)
  • Von Kossa   _______(calcification)
  • Congo Red ________(amyloid)
  • Oil red O   _________(native lipid)
  • Periodic Acid Schiff; PAS ____(glycogen, glycoproteins, glycolipids, mucins)
  • Picro Sirius Red; PSR _____(collagen)
  • Herovici’s Collagen Stain _____(mature and younger collagen)
  • Toluidine Blue _____________(Mast cells)
  • Silver stain ________(neuron)

Diagnosis and Analysis

Lab staff are able to complete histopathology diagnosis, experimental analysis, and can perform Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunofluorescence (IF) and double IHC or IF stains in:

  • Culture cells,
  • Paraffin-section
  • Frozen-section
